I’m going to tell you a short story and you tell me if it sounds familiar.
There once was a town where all the inhabitants had a job, house, and two cars in the driveway. Every day they went to work and came home and sometimes they would go out on the weekends for a drink. They all seemed happy, yet they all complained about stupid things. Deep down, not a single soul in this town was happy. They all regretted the fact that they did not go after that one thing in life that they wanted. They ‘sold out’ for the security of a 9 to 5 job and the luxuries that came with it. So, to compensate, they made up stories to tell themselves so they feel better and continued to bore themselves with the fake reality of prime time television.
Everybody was looking for the ‘answer’, yet nobody could seem to find it…Sound familiar? Sound like a place you don’t want to live?
I knew someone who grew up in a place very similar to this. Everybody seemed to be happy, everybody seemed to be enjoying their life.
Yet, deep down they knew that they were selling themselves short. They would get mad over stupid things that didn’t matter and blame things like the government for their problems. They looked down on other people’s success and passed it off as luck. I knew from an early age that I didn’t want to live in that world. I didn’t want to play that ‘game’. I wanted to create the life I wanted. A life I could be proud of. I’m guessing that if you have found yourself here you also want to create a life for yourself. Well, I’m here to tell you that it is possible to create a life following your passion. It is possible for you to break outside of therole society has thrown you into. All it takes is a choice..
Now, this will not be easy. People will see you taking a chance and they will immediately try to put you down or tell you to do the ‘sensible’ thing. “Be realistic,” is a phrase I constantly hear. I’m here to tell you that nobody EVER created anything of value by being realistic. Think of everything you love doing and I bet you can trace origins back to a person who was being unrealistic.
If I were to tell you about an idea for a machine that could move you from one spot to anotherwhile flying you through the air in 1900, you would of said that I was crazy. You would of told me to ‘be realistic!’ Thankfully, for the world the Wright brothers didn’t follow that advice.
The one thing you should never settle for ismediocrity. One of my favorite quotes of all time comes from the actor, Will Smith. “Being realistic is the most common path to mediocrity.” This quote is a quote you should memorize and say to yourself every single day when you get up. I know I do. This quote alone can be a motivator to go after your goals every single day. I know I do not have all the answers.
Hell, I know some of you even after reading this article will say, “who the hell is this guy to tell me something,” and that’s ok. I know this articlewon’t resonate with everyone. I know that not everybody will follow the words above, and that’s ok. This article will resonate with the people who need it and to those people I say:
Avoid mediocrity, be unrealistic, go after your dreams, and create the life you want, but never settle absolutely never settle with mediocrity!
